Watching and reading every update is disturbing and heartbreaking. I couldn't sleep much last night, still wondering and waiting to hear about friends, former coworkers and classmates, and even former bosses. I was finally able to sleep after a while but with lack of hydration and sleep, my nerves were still shaky. I spoke with my younger sister who works about a ten minute walk from the blast site who told me more details about the aftermath she witnessed. Her work is right by the Mass General Hospital so it was a very busy area. When our conversation devolved into just, "I love you so much, I was so scared," repeated over and over, I never wanted to be at home more.
I thank my friends who attempted to lighten my mood since I and they know how much of a motherly worrier I tend to be. A couple sixth graders in my morning classes asked me what was wrong (I wasn't exactly as chipper as my normal self) and I couldn't help but cry. I pulled myself together quickly and just explained that sometimes the world is a sad place.
It was so surreal being in such a small world here. No one had a clue of the events across the ocean. My students went about their normal day, nothing had changed for them. No matter who I talk to here, they don't seem to understand. While it's frustrating to me that I don't have anyone here who can offer an empathetic hug or even a sympathetic one, I guess I have to remember that perhaps they don't have a feeling to compare. Violent crimes aren't even much of an issue here. In this I envy people. I hope no one ever has to experience what happened at the Boston Marathon.
I have a very deep love for Boston. I used to go on walks with my friend Chelsea and I said the reason I love Boston is because while New York has stories, Boston speaks. I don't mean that I don't like New York (although I do prefer Boston) but you can feel Boston breathe. It's an old friend and a warm hug. I always feel at home and it's the one city I'd probably want to move back to if I ever decide to raise a family in the U.S. And throughout all the press releases and briefings the politicians and police are right, Boston is a tough little city and they'll get through it.

Devastated.
For my readers out there who haven't heard, today, April 15, 2013 was the Boston Marathon. One of the biggest marathons in the world. Three bombs have gone off just a few meters from where I used to work and where I lived. My sister works in the area. Boston isn't my hometown but it is my second home. I began my adult life there. I can tell you each business lining that street, where I'd meet friends, how I loved to sit by the fountain at Copley on my break, and which food trucks are in front of the library on what day. If I had decided against trying teaching last September, I might have still been working in that area. I would have finished work right around that time and then gone out to watch the runners finish.
While I am incredibly relieved to hear my friends and family are alright, I am still distraught that this senseless act of violence occurred in a place I hold so dear. Just today I expressed how beyond joyous I am to return to Boston and see the faces and places I love. Today has been a very dark day. I still await my return to the U.S. with great anticipation. Everyone has an extra tight hug coming their way.
My prayers and thoughts go out to those injured and the families of the dead.
I hope yours do, too.
Edit: There were only two bombs that exploded and more undetonated bombs. The incident at the JFK Library is being reported as an unrelated mechanical fire.

Little Rascals.
These are my kids at SNP school. They drive me absolutely bonkers but are pretty good kids. We had an incident on Thursday when the hyperactive little ruffian in the back, Andy, took the chewing gum out of his mouth, stretched it, and wrapped it around his head. Then he started to cry because it got stuck and he was worried his grandmother would be furious. We spent ten minutes pulling and cutting gum out of his hair and eyelashes and then I gave him a big hug. Poor kid has a little bald spot.
I'm sensitive, okay?
I'm so amazed to see how lush the grass stays throughout the winter here in Czech. It's so beautiful. Now that it's spring, the sun is shining and all the rabbits and deer are running around everywhere. While I was on the train to Praha we passed by fields that looks so green it was surreal and rabbits were hopping around everywhere. The countryside looked so majestic I started to tear up. It makes me think about my parent's lawn back home. It's only green if dad doesn't happen to spill any chemicals on it. I remember for quite some time there was a large patch of lawn that had fallen victim to some experiment executed by my family's lone male. I think fondly on my father's knack for tinkering with things. If he doesn't know how to fix it, he will figure it out. He built the dining room, Kyla's bedroom, the new shed, fixes the roof on his own, tends to the garden with my mother. It makes me think of my entire family so fondly because I realize that we're a family of fixers and nurturers. I know I have felt a distance from my family as many people do when they are teenagers. I know I wasn't a teenager when this occurred but I've always been a late bloomer. In my mid-twenties, I'm still growing and maturing but I can say that the way that the Czech countryside makes me feel is how I feel about my family. It's a thing of beauty and love. We've seen rough winters but we pull through.
HappyList 07.04 - .13.04
07.04 - Got my first massage ever. I hurt my neck and back in Berlin and it's been killing me so my directors set it up for me. I'm feeling so much better. And it was 500kč for 2 hours!
08.04 - It's so nice out! Finally! It's been so dull and cold for so long. Kristy and I can't resist going out to dinner
09.04 - Tuesdays are rough days for me. Little Hana and Veronika make my day so much better. I was in such a good mood, I went for an extremely pleasant walk around the university campus.
10.04 - I had a really great class with the kindergarteners. It was so good that my director wants me to teach the kids "Ten Little Indian Boys" so we can have a little performance for the parents.
11.04 - Kristy and I went out to Mexita for the first time. It's a Mexican/Italian place that we heard was terrible and therefore we had to try it. It was good! And spicy yum yum!
12.04 - My new adult lesson is great. He's a really nice person and always so cheery. It made Friday afternoon very pleasant.
13.04 - Kristy and I went to Praha for a little while. I wanted to check out Halal Galaxy to see if perhaps they had beef/chicken/turkey bacon. Unfortunately they didn't but I did find beef pepperoni. It's been years since I've had so why not? I also found some falafel mix and pita bread. Then Kristy and I went to Bubbleology for a little treat. I got hot taro bubble tea and Kristy got just cold black bubbletea. Then we went for a walk in a cemetery. I also got a new scarf because I only had a 1000 kč bill and needed to buy a 24kč metro ticket.

Let's just do a week summary thing.
02.04 - Two of my morning classes were canceled so I was able to go home for a nice coffee break before my afternoon classes.
03.04 - I received two drawings from two of my students. It made today a little nicer because it's snowing again and I have a migraine.
04.04 - Dušan, my English and Czech speaking ambassador took two pairs of my favorite shoes to the cobbler and they just came back today! It was so cheap. It cost almost $15 for both shoes. I got a pair of boots fixed in the U.S. (with the same issue, heel and sole needed to be replaced) and it cost me $60. Geez.
05.04 - New student today! And it's an adult so we have more to talk about.
06.04 - It's still cloudy but area around the university campus is still so lush and beautiful.

HappyList Update
30.03 - Being at the East Side Gallery made happy to be human. I nearly cried out of happiness. Finding Trdelnik and roasted almonds (usually only found at the Christmas Markets). Seeing my friend Máté and meeting some new friends.
31.03 - Getting lost in the Mauerpark Flea Market and finding proper chilis, zaatar, and baklawa. I stumbled across the Os Gemos mural in Kreuzburg and Betka and I found ourselves at a little concert.
01.04 - So happy to be home. The sun was out and for a short while after I got off the bus, I didn't even need my jacket.
